Lesson 1 in Unreal Environments

Lesson Information

In this lesson, you'll learn the basics of Unreal and begin crafting your environment idea. You'll find references, build a library of assets, and assemble those assets together into one convenient staging area. By the end of this lesson, you'll have all the tools you need to start building your own environment.

Homework
Set the Mood

Using your idea from the Brief Builder Tool, create a mood board. Even the act of searching for reference can spark your creativity! If you don't have Photoshop, don't worry. There are plenty of free options for photo editing.

Take Control

Before doing any building, get comfortable with the Unreal Engine controls.

Bring in Assets

Find and import assets for your project. Don't forget to make sure the assets have everything you need before making a purchase.

Build the Zoo

Once you've imported all the assets you want to use, build an Asset Zoo scene. Make sure everything looks good from various camera and lighting angles.

Share Your Work

Upload an image of your Asset Zoo using the 'Upload Homework' button above, so your instructor and fellow students can see your progress!

Like most others here, I'm missing 'NaturalRoads' and 'Moorland' packs, and I start under the map when trying to play MoorlandCity. But I'm also unable to move or interact at all when I select FirstPersonGameMode and try to play any of these levels. Anyone have a hint on that? I'm able to open a fresh new project and it works there just fine.

Hey, it's because the upload is broken. The project is missing some key files. I'm working with the team to correct it ASAP.
You would need this file:
DefaultInput.ini
For the controls to work.

That's not really an issue, the content would be there, if you would buy the assets from unreal marketplace, but since you have to download data directly from the files that you download here, from link under the video, all you need to do is.

1) Download it
2) Extract the data into Unreal Engine 4 folder - more specifically into VaultCache inside this folder
3) Then go to vaultcache, UE_Files, LS_LearnSquared and then launch unreal app on the bottom of this learnSquared folder

But I have to warn you, the new data what you have to download are not complete, there are at last two levels missing an we are waiting for fix... without it, you wont get far in this course... altrough I hope that this three step guide helped you :)

Can you please help with another download link for the project file its taking forever even having a speed of 80 MBS.... still am having difficulties downloading it...thanks in advance

This may have been said somewhere and I missed it, but what version of Unreal was the tutorial recorded in? It seems many of the settings for lightmaps are not where they are said in the tutorial. Is the project file made in a different version then the video was recorded?

Hey, could you tell me which settings you're referring to? The tutorials are recorded in an older version, but the vast majority of the UI remains the same. About the only change is the Modes panel becoming a Modes tab.

I have to say that I am a little annoyed if he is giving away all these packs (if they are full packs) with the course considering I spent a great deal of money purchasing all of these packs and they are free with the course. I have to be honest I am sort of pissed.

Ok great, thanks for the reply. I of course realize you need to supply some content for the class and that is clearly understandable. I got a little nervous when he started naming off all the packs and I was like "Wow, they are giving them full packs, well that sucks considering I bought all of your packs." I am good now that I know they are just pieces. Thanks. I haven't got a change to see what is in the content because I saw the message that you needed to upload more files so I deleted the download until it was corrected. Thanks so much but I love it so far.

Hey,
The issue is there will always be some overlap between what's on marketplace and what I provide here as project files. I tried to find a good middleground in this case.
All of the included Brushify content is necessary to build the Moorland City scene that I create in the course. The scene is very large and needs Forests, Cliffs, Moorland and Urban Buildings. IF you notice though packages are not Full packs... For instance there is only 1 road texture packaged in the project, if you had the full natural roads there would be 16.. I simply made it possible to open the example map... But the roads are not included.
This is the same for every pack, only the assets used in my learn squared scene are included. That's also why the download size is so small. If they were full packages the size would be 25GB+

After the update a few Brushify packages are missing. Wouldn't be better to have a redemption code? Also there are a lot of minor things not working, for instance the input manager is not setup. I guess that they forgot to append the unreal config files (where that's store) to the project.

Hey guys - so I'm just getting started with all this and am a little behind (planning to chip away at it while freelancing full-time), I'm at the point where I'm supposed to start downloading assets - I downloaded the big update for Lesson 1, but all it contains is the moodboard files, and Brushify content, which I can't find a way to load. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey Christian - do we really need to upload assignments in order to get the other files? Also, for me there are no project files to download for lesson 2, and 3, just lesson 1. Wondering if we have to complete that first before the others come available? At this point I just wish I could get all the Lesson 1 files and figure out how to add the Brushify assests so I could continue.

I am having the same issues as well. I see the brushify alphas and everything. I think we just need to possibly work on the other parts such as asset gathering and references. I am sure our questions will get solved soon about the brushify additions to our library hopefully.

Hello,

as someone down here already mentioned, some levels, like Natural Roads and Moorlands are missing. And if I click on play button in Moorland City, the camera will appear somewhere under the map.

When can we expect fix?

(btw, yes, i downloaded new 9.2 GB package)

Thank You

Hi everyone, when I play in Joe's project file (project name LS_LearnSquared.uproject) the character in firstpersongamemode does not start where the start is indicated, but starts underground, one of you has encountered this problem, or I mistake something.

Thank you all
