Lesson 1 in Unreal Environments

Lesson Information

In this lesson, you'll learn the basics of Unreal and begin crafting your environment idea. You'll find references, build a library of assets, and assemble those assets together into one convenient staging area. By the end of this lesson, you'll have all the tools you need to start building your own environment.

Homework
Set the Mood

Using your idea from the Brief Builder Tool, create a mood board. Even the act of searching for reference can spark your creativity! If you don't have Photoshop, don't worry. There are plenty of free options for photo editing.

Take Control

Before doing any building, get comfortable with the Unreal Engine controls.

Bring in Assets

Find and import assets for your project. Don't forget to make sure the assets have everything you need before making a purchase.

Build the Zoo

Once you've imported all the assets you want to use, build an Asset Zoo scene. Make sure everything looks good from various camera and lighting angles.

Share Your Work

Upload an image of your Asset Zoo using the 'Upload Homework' button above, so your instructor and fellow students can see your progress!

Hey, are you importing them via Quixel Bridge? Be sure to use the UE4 preset for that. That way the scale should be correct.
You can always go into the Static Mesh (double click it in content browser) and go to the details panel on the right. Find the Lod0 section and look for Build Settings. Under Build scale you can change the value to scale up and down the asset. Hit Apply and save.
Cheers,
Joe

Joe- I noticed (even when uncompressed) the new file I downloaded was much smaller than the original 9+GB file from last week. Is that as it should be or am I supposed to save some files from the original download and add to the latest download?

@Andras - It's worth grabbing the latest because you'll have access to the other levels. Some were missing as the files got corrupted.
@Saf - That is fixed in the new update. Please grab the latest.

Thanks Joe. Enjoyed the course. Its been mentioned elsewhere, but the FirstPerson BP is corrupted when opening the files in UE4.25 (the same may happen in other versions). It seems character can no longer be moved on-screen as the keyboard bindings are no longer present in the project. Not a biggie, but thought I would mention it in case there was a quick workaround as an alternative to rebuilding it manually.

Hey Joe, I downloaded the Project files yesterday, should I redownload the files? For me personally, I had issues with spawning the fps character (the character was stuck, couldn't move) other than that no problems. Although I just had a quick run. Cheers

Great lesson, exactly what I was looking for!
A few bugs to report. Http Error 502 Occurred keeps popping up. Sometimes a "This video can not be played" Error code: 203000. reload page and the video will then work.

I'm very new to UE4 and purchased this course yesterday. The download worked without any issue and I was able to open up the LS project and navigate through a couple of maps that Joe had walked through. I thought my computer was locked up at the 95% mark, but it took about 12-15 mins to finally load (Is that normal and how can you improve this?). Looking forward to learning! Thank you.

I've downloaded the 9.2gb "fixed" asset pack just announced in my LS notification.. Opening the ue proejct gives my machine a blue screen of death and needs restart....

Super keen to get on with the course. Set aside time this w/e to learn, but stuck here... Anyone have a fix??

Just to note, I've been successfully using editor 4.25, 4.24, 4.23 on other projects and it's fine, just opening the supplied one kills my machine... Also, Joe you might want to update the video since it says " load you assets from the market place" when these are the downloaded LS_LearnSquared unreal project files, not a brushify pack purchased from Marketplace. Please let us know if there is another work around!
