Lateral Design Fundamentals

Lesson 1 of 2 Rethinking Weapon Design

In this first lesson, you will unlearn anything you've already learned about weapon design. Luis will demonstrate his unique photo texturing approach, and help you to see shapes and patterns in ways you may not have thought of before. You will find artists whose work inspires you, you'll look for reference images to help spark creativity, and you'll use provided template material to practice your new skills. By the end of this lesson, you will have created your first set of basic weapon designs.

  • Get Your Hands Dirty

Use the template provided in this lesson's project files to create a set of 2-4 symmetrical weapon concepts. Get creative, and keep the designs rough. For extra credit, you can try creating some asymmetrical designs as well.

  • They Should Have Sent a Poet

Find three artists whose work really inspires you. Keep images from these artists on a PureRef board, not to use directly in your own artwork, but to help spark innovations during the creation stage. For extra credit, find even more artists and add them to your PureRef board.

  • Hack and Slash

Create your own original blade. Start by designing a custom silhouette, then find photo textures online and begin applying those to your base. For extra credit, build some alternate versions. Upload your finished homework to the Learn Squared homework gallery.
