Mattes and Channels

Lesson 2 in HUD Animation

Lesson Information

Unlock the power of mattes and channels within After Effects. In this lesson, Ryan will cover his techniques for building a series of black and white animations to drive complex transitions and effects. Utilizing these methods, you'll be able to quickly generate variation within your HUD animations without complicating your workflow.

Homework
Assignment

Pick a design and use the skills you've learned to create a cool bootup and shutdown animation. The design should have at least 3 layers, and if not, find a way to break it up into 3 distinct stages.

Reveal the layers (or stages) one at a time, and add variation to the reveals so they don't feel too similar. For a challenge, try to make the shutdown feel unique, rather than a reversal of the bootup.

Maybe it's just me but in the video Adding an Edge Matte I couldn't figure out why my mosaic effect was muddy and Ryan's colors were so vibrant. I spend 15 minutes checking on my mattes, curves, levels, and glow effects. But it turns out there is a Sharp Colors check box under the Mosaic effect. Check this box and you'll get those bright white effects!
