Understanding Space
Lesson 1 of 11 Planets & Stars
In this lesson, you will explore real scientific reference to learn how each type of planet, star, asteroid, nebula and more works. At the end of this lesson, you will create your own star field artwork.
Conveying Scale Homework
Find references from real-life space imagery, or from space scenes in movies, TV or games, which you think convey scale effectively. Then, using VERY simple shapes, try creating some sketches based on these images to convey scale. Play around with placements and shapes, to see how they affect the feeling of size.
Don’t worry about the quality, texture or realism of your sketches during this homework. We’ll get to the specifics of planet & star creation later in the course. For now, focus purely on the scale fundamentals.
Star Fields Homework
Create at least one star field using one of the three techniques Gabriel demonstrated. However, because star fields will be a crucial piece of any future images you do in this course, we recommend experimenting with all three techniques and seeing which ones (or combinations) you like best!
