Rendering
Lesson 5 of 6 Concept Art for Video Games
In this lesson, Daniele will teach you both of his rendering workflows. The first builds toward a final paintover stage in Photoshop, and the second finishes everything entirely in Blender.
- Set Dressing Homework- Create a surrounding area for your design. - Level 1: Follow along with Daniele's design. You don't need to use the same kitbash assets he uses. Explore some free options before making a purchase! - Level 2 & 3: Create a surrounding area that suits your design. - Remember that this surrounding set is only meant to serve as a background, and shouldn't steal attention from your actual design.
- Lighting & Finishing Homework- First, optimize your scene using the techniques Daniele demonstrated. After this, you will light your scene. - Level 1: Create a lighting scenario that matches what Daniele created. For students who have customized their designs or backgrounds, adjust the lighting as needed for your scene. - Level 2: Create two alternative lighting scenarios: one for day and one for night. If your design is fully indoors, you can instead do one setup that's lit normally, and a second lit by emergency power. - Level 3: Do the same as Level 2, but create a third lighting setup that gives the scene a totally new feel.
- Camera and Render Pass Homework- Set up cameras and then create all renders needed for the paintover stage, covering beauty shots and functionality sheets. - Level 1: Follow Daniele's choices. For extra credit, set up one extra beauty shot of your own. - Level 2: Create a beauty shot to display each of the lighting schemes you set up earlier, in addition to your functionality sheets. - Level 3: Do the same as Level 2, but include a third beauty shot to show your extra lighting scenario.
- Alternative Beauty Shot Homework- Create a new beauty shot, utilizing the alternative workflow Daniele outlined in this chapter. Set up the Realtime Compositor, and then update background elements, tweak lighting and make any other changes you feel are needed. Finally, render out your image. - For extra credit, try using a new camera angle for this alternative beauty shot, so that your two renders feel even more different.
