3D Modeling
Lesson 2 of 6 Concept Art for Video Games
In this lesson, you will take your initial 3D blockouts from the previous lesson and begin to refine them in Blender. Then you will simulate a client request, making changes based on feedback.
- Model Preparation Homework- If you blocked out your model in VR, import it into Blender using the steps described during this chapter. - Whether you used VR or Blender for the blockout, you should double check your scale to confirm your model is the size you intended it to be. You can also make any other cleanup tweaks you think are necessary, but don't worry too much about refining—the next two lessons will be all about adding details and tweaking your design!
- Main Shapes Homework- Now it's time to work on the main shapes of your model. Think of this stage as a more refined blockout, where you can reconsider some of your choices and add a bit of complexity without going too far into tiny details. - Level 1 students will of course follow Daniele's design, while Levels 2 & 3 will work on whatever is needed to bring their model to a good spot.
- Organization Homework- Now that your design is in a good place, spend some time making sure your collections are organized. Try to split up the elements in a logical way, so that you can easily isolate certain sections to work on later. - It's a good idea to also keep collections for backups, unused pieces and booleans, so that everything is as organized as possible.
- Client Request Simulation Homework- This homework will simulate the experience of making different kinds of client changes. Follow your level's path below. For extra credit, students at lower levels can try the higher-level assignments! - Level 1: Follow the design changes Daniele decided on during the chapter. - Level 2: Consider one or two areas where you could add extra details to your design. - Level 3: Show your design to a trusted friend, colleague or family member for revision ideas. - After completing your level path, students of all levels should make the necessary changes using one of the quick paintover techniques Daniele showed in this chapter.
