3D Sketch

Lesson 2 of 6 Advanced Vehicle Design

In this lesson you’ll learn some of Alex’s favorite 3D workflows and then begin your 3D sketch. You’ll continuously check in with paintovers until you have a solid 3D design to work with.

  • Initial Blockout Homework

Using your 2D sketch as a base, begin creating a basic 3D blockout of your vehicle design. Don’t worry about adding any details — it’s best to stick to basic shapes for now. Once you have your blockout, do a quick overpaint to plan out your next steps.

  • 3D Sketch Modeling Homework

Bring your 3D model to a stage where you’re ready to begin a clean paintover for early presentation. Use Alex’s current progress as a guide for how much detail to shoot for. You should have enough there to indicate your ideas, without worrying about the micro-level details.

  • 3D Sketch Paintover Homework

Render out screenshots of your finished 3D sketch, and bring them into Photoshop for a final 3D sketch paintover. This will be the final step before moving into the detailed vehicle modeling stage, so make any design decisions you feel are necessary before moving forward.

For extra credit try doing some variant versions. Then choose your favorite of these to move forward with in the rest of the course.
