Lesson 2 Assignments0 of 3 Assignments Completed
  • Stencil Practice Homework

Practice applying stencils on rough 3D models. You can use the provided Stencil Starter Kit and Blockout Blender File (available in this lesson's downloadable files) to practice the techniques without needing to build pieces of your own.

Once you've had some practice, ideate and blockout your own prop, and try applying stencils to that!

There will be a chance to make custom stencils later, so treat this as practice where you can be more loose and experimental with the way you apply designs. Have fun and take your time during this stage!

  • Stencil Creation Homework

Using the process Marco demonstrated, create a set of your own stencils which match your planned prop design.

Then apply your custom stencils to the 3D blockout you created earlier, to bring out all different kinds of details. Take your time and experiment with different ways to utilize the stencils, such as combining, cropping, stretching and skewing to get new looks.

For now, you should focus on applying stencils to only the main element of your prop. You’ll see another aspect of Marco’s process later, which will let you use the same stencils as kitbash elements on the supporting areas of your asset.

  • Final Artwork Homework

Add any further details needed to bring your model to completion. This can involve more stencils, custom modeling, or utilizing the stencils to create kitbash pieces like Marco demonstrated. You can also branch out into building multiple props.

Once you are finished with modeling, bring your image to a final paintover stage to present your work.
