Initial 3D Blockout
Lesson 3 of 5 Interior Concept Design
In this lesson you will block out your space with rough shapes based on your design sketches. Then you’ll create a set of black and white 2D paintovers and simulate the first presentation of your design to clients.
Kitbash Creation Homework
Create a simple kitbash set that can serve you throughout the 3D modeling stage. Limit the elements you create to the ones you think will be needed for your specific space and design. Keep the details simple here, as the main purpose of these kitbash elements is to have accurate scale that you can access easily for use in your space.
Earliest Blockout Homework
Create the first rough 3D blockout of your interior, based on the design you created in Lesson 1. Then take a screenshot of your model and bring that image into 2D in order to do rough sketches over the top and analyze what needs to be changed.
Don’t be afraid to make big changes to the design or layout, because this early pre-detail stage will always be the easiest time to make radical alterations. Keep some notes about what you want to add into the scene as well, to use as a visual checklist when refining later.
Blockout Render Homework
Build up your 3D model and address any notes or larger changes you decided on during the earlier homework assignment. From there, render out a few different views of the space. You’ll be painting over these in the later chapters to create your first black & white presentation.
Make sure to keep your model’s level of detail in check. There will be time to add small elements later in the course, so the things visible at this stage should be limited to aspects that communicate forms and tell your story.
Early Presentation Homework
Create paintovers of your rendered views, paintovers of your plan and section views, and a rough video walkthrough of your 3D model. All these deliverables should be black & white, and should be kept to a low enough amount of detail to encourage collaboration by team members. Create versions of your finished paintovers with annotations as well, to clearly communicate your ideas to viewers. Everything should be compiled into a clean presentation, which would be ready to go to a client or art director.
