2D and 3D Techniques

Lesson 1 in Intro to 3D Concept Design

Lesson Information

Deciding which dimension to work in is a tough choice. To start things off, Jama will walk you through the advantages and disadvantages of using 2D vs. 3D, and the power of combining them together. We will then do a tour of 3D-Coat, including the tools and workflow Jama uses to create concept sketches.

Thanks a lot Marina!. I'm still struggling a bit with the interface of the website so didn't immediately noticed your reply. I believe this is still the old forum so as soon as you're in the new one give me a shout as I tried to tag you in my reply and couldn't find your username.
Thanks a lot for the feedback. As I've just reposted the work I will slowly improve and updates my homework as I follow along the course.
But thanks for taking the time to reply:P

Hello everyone! My name 's Marco Caradonna, It's a pleasure to meet you all.
This is my first homework and I had a lot of fun with it. As other mentioned before, I struggled mostly with the technical side of the exercise (understanding the UI of both 3D coat and Keyshot, fiddling with options etc) and it's been really time-consuming, in-between jobs and whatnot . Nevertheless this seems to be the first time I see the light at the end of the tunnel in my year-s long mistrust of 3D software so just wanted to say thanks for the killer course. I feel empowered already:P.
Anyway, cutting to the chase, if anyone has feedback I'd be glad to hear it. After lunch I'll post the other renders (with different camera angle) I've been playing with. Couldn't develop them any further but it was both fun and entertaining fiddling with the camera and settings.
M.

P.S.
I'm a bit confuse about where posting exercises. I see there's another thread but this one seemed more active?

Hi! Welcome, I feel you totally, I'm the same with 3d programs, let's see if this helps us. I love the mood with that port and sky, and the composition is ace! Only thing I'd improve would be the material quality of the tall buildings, I'd make them more cristal like, shiny dark material, I liked how they standed out in the renders (of course, without going too crazy with the black and dark quality due to aerial perspective). I hope this helps!

Hi All

Even though my avatar name is Stella (she's our admin), my name is actually Jason Pickthall (@Jpickthall)

Just started this course. Lesson 1 is worth the price alone. I'll be posting up my offerings soon. Great work everyone, really inspiring to see.

Hello guys, here are some of my works after lesson 1... the ones with "spherical object" are my first tryouts.. honestly I had no idea what I was doing... just wanted to make it work somehow.. after that I kinda understood the tool and traps that came along with that approach a bit better decided to try one more. This time I came up with a little bit more elaborated design language and cleaner "3d coat sketch"... pretty happy with a second batch, but any comment / contructive feedback is most welcomed.. :D :D
