Lesson 1 in Unreal Environments

Lesson Information

In this lesson, you'll learn the basics of Unreal and begin crafting your environment idea. You'll find references, build a library of assets, and assemble those assets together into one convenient staging area. By the end of this lesson, you'll have all the tools you need to start building your own environment.

Set the Mood

Using your idea from the Brief Builder Tool, create a mood board. Even the act of searching for reference can spark your creativity! If you don't have Photoshop, don't worry. There are plenty of free options for photo editing.

Take Control

Before doing any building, get comfortable with the Unreal Engine controls.

Bring in Assets

Find and import assets for your project. Don't forget to make sure the assets have everything you need before making a purchase.

Build the Zoo

Once you've imported all the assets you want to use, build an Asset Zoo scene. Make sure everything looks good from various camera and lighting angles.

Share Your Work

Upload an image of your Asset Zoo using the 'Upload Homework' button above, so your instructor and fellow students can see your progress!

Okay np, LS_LearnSquard works now. Crashed first 3 times. Maybe something was loading. I am in 4.25.4 now. As a new learner, might as well start with the latest.
Is it possible to use 4.26 for this course.
Thanks for the help, sorry for the trouble.

Hello, I am able to load the project file and see all of the content, I just dont see where you can have the brushify content added to the vault. I do see there is a default vault location but when i just copy the brushify folder into there nothing happens after I reopen the library. Thanks

For any students wondering about the downloadable project files, we're in the process of reuploading everything under a single, consolidated package which should make it easier to follow along. We're anticipating this to be uploaded today (10/29) around 1:30pm PST and the total download size will be around 10GB.

If you've already downloaded the files from Lesson 1, 2, and 3, we recommend redownloading the new package once it's uploaded and deleting your previous downloads so you can guarantee you've got the latest and greatest assets from Joe. Sorry for any confusion this might have caused!

Thanks for the official update :D

Also for anyone who missed it, there is a new video added called "Lesson Files Walkthrough" and is 08:28 long. It's the 4th video in the first section of lesson 1 called "Introduction".

They are re-working the files a bit and took down the old link to avoid confusion. People found the file layout a bit hard to follow. They're coming back up today along with an additional video to help get everyone set up correctly a little better according to the comment thread here.

I'm having the same issue. Looking through the comments I think there's a bit of confusion on some of the downloadable files and I'm guessing Joe has taken the previous link down and is re-organizing/uploading the material? That's my hope at least.

We're in the process of reuploading everything under a single project directory now, but if you go to Lesson 2 and 3 and download those files, you can find the city and moorlands assets in there for the time being!

Hey! The Brief Builder is not actually an app or a tool, it's just simply a reference sheet which Joe reviews in the lesson (in the video titled 'Brief Builder Tool') to help you quickly spin up unique ideas for your environments.
