Deciding which dimension to work in is a tough choice. To start things off, Jama will walk you through the advantages and disadvantages of using 2D vs. 3D, and the power of combining them together. We will then do a tour of 3D-Coat, including the tools and workflow Jama uses to create concept sketches.
Homework
Assignment
1. Starting from silhouttes, create a futuristic cityscape. Try using different shapes from study to build a nice variety creating your own unique shapes.
Hi everyone, I keep getting grainy rooftops when I apply the height maps due to very slight variation in my grey tones in photoshop. This is happening despite my brushes being at 100% opacity, flow etc. Unfortunately I couldn't upload a picture on here. I also tried upping the resolutio =n in 3d Coat but that didn't help. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, cheers!
Octane is amazing, for 20 bucks per month or 600€ in unlimited license. Otherwise you can get Blender for free and use cycles or Eevee within it. Jama says that 3d coat's renderer isn't bad either, but I never tried it.
A bit of a late reply but there are 3 ways to do this:
1) Primitives(these are kind of predetermined shapes)
2) Creating a Sphere and then cutting it out using the cutout tool
3) Using the Sphere tool in combination with the square lasso mode will create a rectangle plane in the thickness of the brush so if the lasso is roughly the size of the brush it would hypothetically create a square.
You need to be in sculpt room, then go down to objects on the left-side tab, and click primitives, then you can choose any of them from the top left. Then you choose "radius" and drag it or enter a number to make it bigger. Once you're happy you tap enter or "apply", then it becomes voxels.
sounds like a very rudimentary question, but how does Jama use the Sphere tool but create rectangular voxel blocks? In Mesh Resolutions 0:35.. I am only able to create circular marks base on brush size
How do you snap the camera to like left view, top view etc? i know there are shortcuts on the numpad, but it sounds like you are using a modifier key + clicking? would be nice to not have to move the hand to the numpad.

Is there a good alternative to Keyshot that isn't as expensive yet also easy to learn and able to handle large scenes? Thanks.

did you ever figure it out?

I'm excited on day 1 but I would like more insight on the hotkeys and what exactly they are doing at any given point.

You can press shift when you are rotating and it will snap your camera.

Hi, Jama!
Can you upload your hotkeys for 3D COAT, please?))
Thomas Oates 5 years ago
I'm sure it was mentioned but I cant rediscover the hotkey to subdivide your voxel layer. Where it will say 2x, 3x etc next to the layer name.
Any help appreciated!

Finally got some stuff done for the homework. Really a great workflow for creating quick environments. Sooo much fun!

Hello I'm very new. Does anyone know why when I use the sphere tool rectangles and cubes come out warped a certain way? I added a screenshot.

Hi, use 'orthographic projection' in top-right menu (cube icon).
